Vancouver Convention Centre’s 6 Acre Living Roof

Vancouver Convention Centre’s 6 Acre Living Roof

The roof at the Vancouver Convention Centre is covered with over 2.5 hectares (6 acres) of native grassland. Although the green roof is usually closed to the public, this documentary, part of Growing Cities series, was able to get a tour and interview with the landscape architect of the project, Bruce Hemstock.

The green roof has been landscaped with more than 400,000 indigenous plants and grasses from the Gulf Islands (between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia), providing natural habitat to birds, insects and small mammals. This unique ecosystem is planted over 12 inches of growing media.
