Arup designed a temporary sound pavilion called Sound Portal for the 2012 London Design Festival. Open to the public daily from 19 to 23 September, the 85 sqm circular pavilion incorporated an ambisonic speaker array. Each day, the Sound Portal hosted one of five leading musicians and sound artists, each of whom created a unique soundscape.
As well as designing the Sound Portal, Arup provided technical support to each of the artists, working with them in the Arup Soundlab to develop the spatial content of their pieces. Some pieces used digital ambisonic panning to position and translate their sounds, whereas others made use of ambisonic recordings using a Soundfield microphone. Others still opted to route specific sounds to specific loudspeakers.
Sir John Sorrell, Chief Executive – Chairman, London Design Festival said:
… it is an extraordinary piece of design and creativity from Arup and it is the most fantastic experience
